Miranda the Geek

Geek Story #1:

Andrew's got a small collection of slide rules. Obviously, these are fairly old, as just about nobody uses slide rules any more, but he's extra geeky, so he really likes them (and I have to admit, they're very elegant little calculators).

He showed one to Miranda, who was intrigued. She's not really advanced enough to do multiplication or whatever, so he got a couple of normal rulers and showed her how to add and subtract with them, by sliding them back and forth. She was amazed, thought it was terribly, terribly cool.

Then it was time for bed and Andrew got her settled and she said "Can I have a slide ruler in bed?"

"No. Why do you want to sleep with a slide rule?"

"I need one! What if I need to add?!"

Geek Story #2
:

Miranda (to me): "I can read better than you."

Me: "I very much doubt that."

Miranda: "I'm the champion reader of my whole school!"

Me: "Your whole school? Don't you mean just the prep grade?"

Miranda: "Oh, right. Because I can read books from Grade 1 and Grade 2."

Me: "Yes, you do read very well."

Miranda: "And Grade 3 and Grade 4...."

Me: "I don't think that's quite true."

Miranda: "But I'm a really good reader."

Me: "Yes, you are. But you're not better than I am."

Miranda: (sullen expression, but nods in acknowledgement)
