Reading

Miranda can read. I've said this before, but people always think, "Oh, sure, she's four, how much does she read?" The answer is: a considerable amount. She astonished one of her pre-school teachers last week by picking up a book and reading it to the other kids. And she reads at home just as well.

Me: Would you like peanut butter on your toast?
Miranda: Yes.
Me: Okay, you pick which one (I meant: crunchy or smooth)
Miranda: (reading from the label) Never oily, never dry (the slogan for Kraft Peanut Butter). I'll have this one. It's never oily, and it's never dry.

Miranda also read a book to Zoë, who was mostly ignoring her. When it was finished, we were delighted by this conversation:

Miranda: There. Did you enjoy that story?
Zoë: No.
Miranda: Would you like me to read you another story?
Zoë: No.
Miranda: Okay. I'll go get another story to read to you.

She's been entertaining herself with a book of Spike Mlligan poems that her Dad gave her. She can't read all the words (some are made up, as well), but she can get the gist of them, and she knows they're funny...
