Unwell
Miss Miranda has a cold that has turned into a croup cough. It's improving now and the fever is gone, but she's still waking up at night coughing. The doctor had a look at her and said that there are currently about five different virus strains going around that could cause it, told me the danger signals to look for, told me that the time-hallowed remedy of putting a vaporiser in the room doesn't actually work or help (although a hot shower can help break up some of the phleghm), and to just treat it like any other illness. Rest, try to get her to eat, plenty of fluids, etc.
Parties and peefeeums
Yesterday was Miranda's uncle's birthday party. She was looking forward to it and got new shoes to wear with her new purple pinafore and new purple tights. She ate spaghetti (and did very well with it, although it's good that we took the precaution of putting a napkin around her neck to protect her clothes), and then ended up having about four pieces of cake (I only knew about two!) and far more chocolate than I would normally let her consume, but people kept giving it to her when I wasn't looking. She seems no worse for wear, I must say, and was up bright and early to go to church.
As for the peefeeums in the title of this entry, I've mentioned that she loves perfume. Today I put on an old favorite of mine, which I haven't worn very much in recent years, Estée Lauder White Linen. Miranda wanted to have some, too, naturally, so I put a bit on her. She smelled it and remarked, "It's very dry." I said, "Do you mean that it dries quickly? Or that it smells dry?" and she said, "It smells dry." And she's right, too. I wouldn't have associated "dry" with this particular fragrance, but if you've ever smelled it, you might also agree that "dry" is a suitable description.
The kid's got a great nose. Perhaps she'll go to Paris and become a perfumer....
