Catching up

Well, I'll try to catch up (sorry for not updating; things have been hectic!).

Miranda's reading vocabulary is over 200 words now, it's quite extraordinary. She does it by recognizing the "shape" of the word, rather than by phonetics, but she does certainly read, and she seems to understand at least some of what she reads, as well.

She's turning into a very bossy little girl, as well. She can be quite demanding and very contrary (sometimes she says "NO" just for the sake of it, I'm quite sure).

Potty training is coming along slowly, but she's getting the idea. Yesterday, we went out for a long day trip and at one stop her dad took her into the parent's room and Miranda saw the toilet and said, "A potty. I go potty. I do a wee." And so she did.

It's still hit-or-miss with the toilet, but once she understands the benefit of using it (no nappy changes, no owie rash on her bottom, the ability to wear pretty panties, etc.), I think she'll do it (it can't be worse than Zoë, who was four years old before she finally got it and figured out about using the potty!).

Speaking of our trip out yesterday, Miranda threw up on herself in the car. Poor kid, she had no idea what had happened, and she'd been asleep prior to throwing up, so it was quite a start, I'm sure. She kept saying, "Yucky! Yucky!" as we cleaned her up.

As we didn't have any spare clothes with us and we were quite some distance from home by that point, I suggested we stop somewhere like Target or Kmart and pick up an inexpensive outfit for her and continue on our way, which is what we ended up doing.

The rest of the day, she was fine and she ate her lunch and then dinner with no more mishaps, so I think it was a combination of the heat, eating too much junk and candy the day before, excitement, and the motion of the car.

Just now, as I was writing this, Miranda came over and informed me that she did a wee on the floor (which she did). As I cleaned it up, I told her it was yucky, and she was saying, "No yucky!" which I interpret to mean she didn't want me to tell her about it. I did anyway, though, because it is yucky and for heaven's sake, the potty's right here and she used it earlier, so there's not much excuse for going on the floor. At least she told me so I could clean it up instead of saying nothing and me finding it later when I slipped in it!

So that's Miranda in a nutshell. Toilet training, stubborn/bossy attitude, and reading well beyond her years.
