Yuck?
Miranda put a lego in her mouth as I watched. I said, "Don't put that in your mouth." SHe said, "Eat?" I said, "It's not to eat." She said, 'Yuck?" I said, "Yuck." She spit it out.
I think that's her first full conversation, actually...
Riddle me this...
Why would any toddler want to drink chocolate milk when she cat sit on the floor and drink water out of the cat's bowl with a plastic toy spoon?
Reading and talking
Miranda has taken to reading and talking as if she understands the significance of it, and the sooner she can communicate, the better her life will be. She's learned most of the alphabet, all of her numbers up to ten, and has established quite a vocabulary for someone who's not quite two and a half. She comments on things all the time, as well. She notes that she sees a duck or a cow or a bird or a car or whatever, and she names letters and numbers when she spots them. She's utterly in love with books, particularly picture books where she can ask the name of the items in the pictures.
We'll see how it goes, but if she's reading by three as her dad was, I won't be too surprised.
Shoes
I noticed that Miranda, who had previously been wearing two socks and two shoes, was wearing only one shoe and one sock.
I said to her, "Where's your shoe?"
She grinned and pointed to the one shoe she was still wearing.
I said, "No, your other shoe," and pointed to the bare foot.
She looked down and then looked back at me and said, "Toes!"
Slide
Today at childcare, Miranda was outside playing when I arrived. Zoë went out to have a play and I quietly observed Miranda as she played.
After a while I went outside and said hello to Miranda, because I could see she wanted to go down the slide but was a little afraid. I went to the bottom and caught her (I didn't really have to catch her; it's a very well-designed slide) and she found it so fun she just kept doing it over and over. She climbed up by herself, she went down by herself, and laughed and laughed.
It just took a little bit of encouragement and off she went...
Talk talk happy talk
Miranda's really taking to this talking thing. She absolutely loves books with pictures in them. She loves to point to the pictures and either name them herself or ask someone else to name them for her. She treats letters the same way, and knows about half the alphabet now.
Today I was drinking a bottle of prepared iced tea and Miranda watched me thoughtfully for a bit and then announced "T E A", which I thought was pretty impressive. She recognized "dog" on a poster at childcare, even though it was a kind of dog she's never seen before, and she comments on a lot of things she sees and recognizes. She even knows what a few animals say (chickens, cats, cows, and pigs, and she sometimes gets dogs and ducks correct, as well).
She also knows the "expected response" to certain words or phrases. For example, if I say, "Sit!" she'll always add "Down!" She also knows that when someone says, "Oh, sh*t," the required response is, "What?"
I think we'll have to really start watching the words we use around here....
