No

Miranda has started saying, "No." Not in a defiant way, but in response to questions. If you ask her if she wants something, she'll say, "No," if that's the case. If she does want it, she'll either get very animated and grin or she'll repeat the word to you.

She's also discovered the rubbish bin. It's fascinating! You just never know what's going to be in there. Sometimes there's food, sometimes there are interesting bits of plastic or shiny things, it's just amazing! You can even put things, like, oh, crayons and toys, into the thing!

I remember when Zoë was going through the "rummage in the rubbish" phase and the bin had to be kept up on the counter all the time to keep her out of it...

Babies and monster voices

Miranda's new oh-so-cute trick is to talk in a monster voice. That, in case you don't know, is a deep, growly sort of voice. She doesn't say many words yet, so she mostly just jabbers and says, "gooda gooda gooda da da da da ba ba ba" in her little growly monster voice. Very cute.

Tonight she found a little baby doll and for the first time, she recognized it was a baby. She held it and gave it a hug, and her dad asked her about the little baby. She grinned at him and pressed the baby's face to her chest. Apparently, it wanted some milk. She also gave it a kiss and then found it hilarious when Daddy played "Where's the Baby?" with the dolly instead of Miranda.

So, imaginative and creative play is developing right on schedule. Oh, and she hasn't bitten me since the last time I wrote about it. Maybe knowing I published it shamed her into behaving (or, more likely, I made such a fuss last time she bit me -- there's still a big bruise on my upper arm -- she decided not to do it any more!).

Ouch!

Miranda's got two new habits, both of them painful.

The first is that she's adopted a high-pitched, howling shriek when she's upset. It's not a sob, not a bawl, not a howl. No. It's an honest-to-goodness SHRIEK. Horrible. Literally makes my ears ring. When she's doing it, you can't hear the television, can't hear anyone talk, can't hear yourself think.

The other thing is that she's started biting me, usually on the shoulder. I don't know what possesses her to do it, but she's done it several times in the past week or so. It's not when she's angry or upset, just randomly when I'm holding her. She'll just lean forward and bite me on the shoulder or upper arm. OUCH!

Naturally, I yelp or shout when she does it (it's quite painful), which of course then upsets her and she does start to cry.

Oh, toddlers. Aren't they just a bundle of fun...

Teeth

Miranda's got two new molars, both on the right, top and bottom. Not sure when she got them through, but I suspect it was last week, because she was unusually crabby all last week.

She's crabby off and on now, as well, in a way that makes me think that a couple more teeth are on the way.
