Trilling

Miranda has taken to making a really cute trilling noise. It's hard to describe, but it's high pitched and involves rolling the tounge very quickly in a sort of "buzzing" sound. Some people never learn how to trill with their tongue, and she does it regularly even though she's not even a year old. Pretty clever, eh?

Eating out

For the first time today, Miranda sat at the table in a high chair in a restaurant. She ate chicken and french fries, and had a go at some raw apple (didn't do too well with that, since she's got no teeth yet).

Pictures of this momentous event are forthcoming and will be online in the next day or two.

Grumpy Girl

Miranda's uncharateristically cranky today. She just wants to be held constantly. And it has to be Mama. Daddy simply won't do. She sat in the high chair and had some lunch, but I was sitting right beside her the whole time. We had a nap together and now I've got her in the sling on my chest as I type and work on updating her pages (surely you noticed; "Five Little Ducks" is her very favorite song).

I suspect she's teething, and she's much calmer after she's had pain relief medicine, but she's still very irritable. Possibly it's the heat, but I don't know why you'd want to be held all the time if you're hot. Then again, I'm not a ten month old baby, so what do I know?

Tonight for dinner...

We had fish cooked out on the barbeque grill, along with grilled zucchini, onion, and potatoes. Miranda had some of all of it except the onions, and the only reason I didn't give those to her is that she still hasn't got any teeth and can't chew them well. She had a great time eating fish, potatoes, and zucchini, though.

Something she doesn't like to eat

Finally found something (other than babyfood green beans or peas, both of which she'll eat if they're fresh) that Miranda doesn't like. Yesterday I had some cottage cheese and pineapple (it comes packaged that way). She saw the bowl and the spoon and got excited, so I gave her some, and she did try it, but she really didn't like it, and ended up spitting most of it out. I suppose cottage cheese is something of an acquired taste. She had yogurt instead, and I finished the cottage cheese.

Scary uncle

Last night, Miranda had occasion to see her Uncle Greg and Auntie Robyn. She doesn't see them that often, and while she's not normally outright afraid of strangers, she's very reserved around people she doesn't know. She'll stare at them a long time before she decides if she likes them or not.

Uncle Greg tried making friends with the baby and was grinning at her and making the usual faces people make at babies they're trying to impress. Finally, he leaned forward and touched his nose to hers.

That was just too much, and she burst into tears. Poor kid. I was talking to her the whole time, saying, "That's your Uncle Greg. He's okay," but it didn't help. He got too close and she went to pieces. Poor Greg looked a bit taken aback and Miranda wouldn't be comforted until I took her where she couldn't see him any more.

Naturally, as I carried her to another part of the house I called out to Andrew (so Greg could hear me), "Andrew! Your brother made our baby cry!"

Buzzing

Miranda has lately been making a strange noise. I thought she might stop doing it, but it's getting stronger. It's a sort of buzzing sound. She does it when she cries and sometimes when she laughs or is happy. It's the sort of noise you make if you put your tongue on the roof of your mouth and, errr... I guess it's a "rolling" sound, the sort of thing a person does if they try to "purr". When Miranda does it, it sounds like a buzz.

So lately, instead of saying, "The baby's crying," we say, "The baby's buzzing. Would you turn it off, please?"

Strawberries

Tonight, Miranda and I shared a dish of my favorite fruit, strawberries. This kid is really fun where food is concerned. She seems to like just about everything (except for most varieties of jar or tinned baby food; she likes fresh food). It's just so fun watching her little face as she tries something new. Last night it was chicken and vegetables with rice, tonight strawberries... Perhaps tomorrow night I'll share our burritos with her. Well, she might like a tortilla, anyway.

I'll eat anything

This child has obviously inherited one of her father's traits. She'll eat anything. She does have some foods she doesn't like as much as others, but pretty much anything we eat is sure to be a hit. Today we had roast beef with roasted vegetables and Miranda very happily ate roast potatoes and carrots and then had a little canteloupe to finish it all off.

Meat Pies

Today, Miranda had a meat pie (steak and onion, in case you wondered). I was eating meat pies for my own lunch and she was fussing to have some, and once I saw she liked it, I ended up giving her half a pie of her very own.

She did make quite a mess with it, but she actually managed to eat most of it, and she certainly seemed to enjoy it. She's a good little Aussie, starting early on the unofficial national dish of Australia (but she didn't have tomato sauce on it).

Talk talk

Miranda seems to be trying to talk. She makes a noise that sounds very like she's trying to say her name. Normally, I wouldn't be that impressed by a baby saying, "Da da da" but she says it when WE say "Miranda." Maybe it's just coincidence, but she does seem to respond verbally that way.

Latest taste treat

Tonight we had homemade hamburgers for dinner. Miranda decided that she likes fresh sliced tomato, although she couldn't quite manage the skin. She was very happy to suck on it and get all the soft, tender bits out of it, though!

Kisses!

Miranda's giving kisses! She loves to stand on my lap and lean forward and get a kiss on the mouth. It's so sweet. She'll kiss her sister, too, but not her dad. Must be all those whiskers.
