Cranky girl

Miranda's been other than her usual happy self lately. I think she's teething, if the way she keeps gnawing on her fingers and sobbing is any indication. Baby pain reliever helps somewhat, but she's still kinda cranky about the whole thing and wants to be held all the time, poor kid.

I've also noticed that she's just an extra measure of cranky if she doesn't get two solid meals a day. Some days I skip lunch and she just has her usual milk feeds and then a solid meal in the eveing. But she really seems to like having two meals, and she's a lot more settled when she gets both.

Since she's almost six months old, I guess it is time she had a couple meals a day, but I'm always hesitant to introduce solids too early or in too great a quantity for various quite good reasons. But, well, if she needs it, she needs it, I guess. It certainly hasn't slowed down her breastfeeding any as far as I can tell!

Sisters are amusing, and other facts

Miranda is really crazy about her big sister. All Zoë has to do is come near the baby, and the baby's laughing and cooing. Zoë can do just about anything and Miranda thinks it's hilarious, even if it's taking away toys (as in, snatching them out of the baby's hands). She just looks at her big sister with such obvious adoration and delight. It's really sweet to watch them together.

Checkup

Miranda had a visit to the health centre today. She's going along very nicely on the growth curves. She was big when she was born, but has since settled down into the average range in height, weight, and head circumference.

In fact, I think we're going to start offering her two solid meals a day, since she's doing very well with the one and she's starting to show signs that a second is in order.

Sociable little chatterbox

Miranda is much more sociable than Zoë. Not that Zoë isn't friendly or affectionate, but she is pretty self-contained, and only takes notice of people when she feels like it. Miranda, on the other hand, absolutely thrives on being around people. When anyone comes into the house (grandparent, neighbor, whatever), she fusses if she isn't able to see them and visit with them a bit.

She's also very vocal. She coos and gurgles all the time, like she's "talking" to us. She seems to enjoy using her voice to communicate.

And in somewhat unrelated news, I've finally gotten around to uploading new pictures of the girls for the May/June time period. Lots of new ones of both of them, including some shots of them together.

How time flies!

Miranda's five months old already. I can hardly believe it! She's rolling over and over now, often to the point of rolling up against the furniture and getting "stuck" there.

She's also enjoying solid food a lot. She doesn't like green beans (lots of people don't) and wasn't very impressed with peas, really, but she absolutely loves every kind of fruit she's tried, and she really enjoyed pumpkin, as well.

All in all, Miranda's doing really well. She's a lovely little kid, very happy and smiley, very friendly, and extremely sociable.

Rolling over and over and over

Well, Miranda's got the rolling over thing figured out, it would seem. Yesterday she rolled from her back to her tummy and then to her back again. She rolled off the mat a couple of times, she got herself turned around different directions. She's very wiggly and strong and seems to be greatly enjoying the prospect of mobility. Sheesh, at this rate it won't be long until she's crawling!

She's also very much enjoying solid foods. She's had a few fruits and a couple of vegetables (carrots are big hit), and rice cereal. Today she had apple and rice with fruit juice mixed in, and she ate quite a bit of it. She hasn't slowed down on her breastfeeding as far as I can tell, although she is sleeping longer at night (note: I think this is coincdental and part of the normal growth process, and I don't attribute the longer sleeping to being put on solid foods).

Tomorrow, I think perhaps we'll try some of the homemade pumpkin I cooked for her last week and froze...

Turning over

She turned over from her back to her tummy, and no one saw it happen. I put her down on her back on a mat on the floor to play and have a bit of a stretch and a wiggle and then went off to bake cookies. Zoë was having a nap, and Andrew was helping in the kitchen. Some time later I went to check on the baby and she was asleep on the mat, lying on her tummy.

And I was worried about the fact that she hadn't managed to turn over yet. Hah!
