Bug in the system

It seems that Miranda has started on solid food sooner than we planned, and it's not the food we would have chosen for her.

You see, Miranda has a toddler for an older sibling, and apparently, the older sibling fed the baby a bug. That's the only way I can figure out that Miranda had a small, certainly dead, millipede-like creepy crawly in her dirty nappy today.

She, of course, seems no worse for wear. Little kids eat bugs (and dirt, and coins, and who knows what) on a regular basis and do just fine. Not that I want to encourage Zoë to feed bugs (or dirt or coins or whatever) to her baby sister, of course. I'm just not going to stress about it.

Andrew's younger brother was fed all sorts of things by his two elder brothers, and he seems more or less all right...

Grasping objects & listening to music

Miranda has started to really hold onto objects. I got a series of pictures of her playing with a toy crab. These shots, and others are now in the photo gallery.

There's another new picture there with a story behind it. It's Miranda in the sling, with a stereo headset on. I was holding her, trying to settle her, and I was listening to the soundtrack of O Brother, Where Art Thou? (which is a really cute film, by the way). On a whim, I put the headset on Miranda, and she stopped crying right away! She fell asleep listening to the music, in fact.

Zoë has always shown a great deal of interest in music. Seems Miranda's got it, too. Not surprising, given the musicality of the family on both sides...

Losing hair

Miranda, like most babies, is losing some of the hair she had at birth. Her ears, which were quite hairy (I thought they looked like makeup for a little werewolf!), are much less so now, and her lovely thick dark curly hair looks much lighter. It's not, I don't think. There's just less of it. Most noticibly, she's getting a slight bald spot in the back from where her skull presses into whatever she's lying on when she sleeps.

I doubt that her curls will go away. The curl pattern is more than just the hair, but also in the scalp in the form of cowlicks and swirls. Andrew's hair is dark and curly. I can't imagine why hers would stop being either.

Her eyes, which have been dark blue since shortly after birth (at birth they were the standard blue-gray), are also turning, I think. They seem to be getting greener. They might turn green (lots of green eyes in the family) or they could turn hazel-brown like mine. Time will tell on that one.

Double pram

We got a double stroller (on sale!) last week. Miranda helped us pick it out. Zoë was with her grandparents for the day, so we only had the baby with us. When we were looking over the stroller to see if it was suitable, Andrew asked if it reclined enough for the baby. I said, "Well, let's see," and put her in it to find out. She grinned and did her little half-laugh when I put her in it, and since it did suit our purposes and she seemed to like it so much, we got it.

There's a picture of her in it with her sister in the photo gallery, along with several new pictures of Miranda.

Doing well

Miranda went to the health center for the usual growth measurements and checkup. She's gaining weight again, and doing well. She's settled down around the 50th percentile for weight now, which is perfectly okay.

The UTI came back, unfortunately. Our doctor wants to refer her to a specialist, since all the usual tests were normal. He just wants to make sure that this is not going to be a continual thing, since UTIs can do a lot of damage if they go untreated, or if the kid has to have frequent antibiotic treatment (that can upset the immune system, among other things).

She's also figured out how to get her fingers and/or thumb into her mouth pretty much whenever she wants. This is a good thing, in my opinion, as it helps her learn how to comfort herself and she's not as reliant on others or the pacifier (which keeps disappearing anyway, since the toddler is fascinated with it and keeps carrying it off to play with!).

Miranda's generally very happy, smiley, and cheerful. She's a real little cherub. I just wish we could capture some of her wonderful grins in a photograph! We'll keep trying...

What a sweet baby

Miranda is absolutely the sweetest baby I've ever seen. This is no insult to any other baby, but Miranda really just wins the prize for "sweet and easy going". She almost never cries (when she does, you know something's really wrong!) and she's almost always happy, and she always grins when she gets her nappy changed! She's just an amazing little bundle of sweet cuddles, and that's the size of it.
