Growth and so on
First, Miranda is smiling now in a much more obvious way. Her previous smiles have been fairly subtle, but last night she gave me a couple of really big, bright grins. She's very alert now when she's awake, and she's just gorgeous all around (but then, I would think that).
She had a visit to the health center yesterday to check her growth and development, and she's gained more weight and length, as well. I knew that already because she's outgrown almost all of her newborn sized clothes already! Official weight is 4830g (about 10lb., 10-11oz.). Official height is 54.3cm (a little over 21in.). Her head measurement is 38.7cm (a little over 15in.). On all the standard growth charts, she's between the 50th and 75th percentile, pretty much.
And finally, there are some new pictures of Miranda in the gallery now.
Six weeks and going strong
Miranda was six weeks old as of Tuesday. She's smiling more now, and she's slowly moving toward sleeping through the night, with periods between feeds getting longer. She's outgrowing all her newborn clothes, too, but if I'd known she was going to be nine pounds, I would have just skipped buying any in that size (we only got a few, but still...).
And yes, she's even cuter now than she was before, or at least, I think so. Whenever we go out, people will actually stop and look at her or ask about her and comment on how beautiful she is! And you know what? They're right.
Pictures
Few new pictures in the photo gallery, and a new one on the opening page of this website. I managed to capture a little smile! Also check out the Miscellaneous category of the photo gallery for some pictures of Miranda with her big sister, Zoë.
New pictures!
I finally got the opportunity to put new pictures of Miranda online. They're all pretty much up to date now, and in chronological order.
Weighty matters
Miranda hasn't gained as much weight as we thought. She went to the Health Centre today for a routine checkup and all that, and it seems that previously the nurse must have written down the number incorrectly (or her portable scale was off, I guess). The baby has gained weight and length (she's outgrowing some of her clothes already!), but it wasn't as much as we thought. She's actually only about 10 lb., 2 oz, rather than being close to 11 lbs. Still, she's above the 50th percentile on the weight chart, so there you go.
Sleep, glorious sleep!
Miranda slept a full six hours straight through last night! Yippee!
She was also awake and quietly alert for several hours in the afternoon and early evening. I'm just happy to get the sleep. While she was awake, she was content to sit in the bouncer and look at a colorful toy that I put in her visual range. She was very alert and bright-eyed for hours. I don't know if her time spent awake contributed to her lengthy sleep, but I'm not going to analyze it. I'm just happy to get the sleep and to see her awake when she's not crying or eating.
Funny thing is that when she woke at 6am to have a feed, she was so sleepy still that she couldn't manage to latch on when I was lying on my side in the bed. I had to sit up and hold her so she could get a decent tummyfull of milk. Mind you, I was nodding off and wobbling around the way you do when you're trying to sit up but falling asleep. She finished one side and promptly went right back to sleep and that was that. She didn't have a complete feed until we actually got up some hours later.
Smile!
Miranda smiled at me this morning. I wasn't sure at first if it was a "true" smile or just a grimace, but she repeated it, almost as if she wanted to make sure I got it. She smiled at me just as she was waking up, and as I reached to pull her up for a cuddle and a feed.
As I write this, she's snuggled up in the sling on my chest, just drifting off to sleep, but I don't know how long that will last. Yesterday she was quite fussy all day, wanting to feed every hour and a half or so, and not sleeping very long when she did manage to drift off. I went ahead and fed her, of course, because I figure she just wants to increase my milk supply.
She's also going longer at night between feeds. She goes at least three hours between, but last night she had a stretch of almost five hours. At least, I think it was that long... I'm getting back into "baby mode" where I can pull the baby into the bed and feed her without fully waking up, so it's hard to tell sometimes if she did wake more than I remember.
Overall, the past four weeks have been pretty good. So far she's living up to her middle name and is proving to be a real joy.
Weight gain!
Miranda was weighed today for her initial visit with the community heath center (sort of a "well baby" clinic). Since her release from the hospital, she has gained 832g, which is a little over 1lb., 13oz. That's almost TWO pounds in just over three weeks! She now weighs 4830g, or about 10lbs., 10½oz. I guess the breastmilk agrees with her, eh?
She's also starting to make a face that looks very like an almost-smile. Her eyes light up and she looks distinctly happy, like she would smile if she could. I think it won't be too long before she's actually smiling for real.
